The Company

Responsibilities

  • To strengthen the companie's overall business performance through supporting and improving the management of environmental risk and opportunity across it assets.
  • Support Copper operational sites in the implementation of all Group level environment requirements, plus any environmental components associated with relevant Group level T&S programmes, such as the Group Operating Model (OM), Operational Risk Management (ORM) programme, Technical Assurance programmes and ISO/OSHAS certification.
  • Support Copper operational sites to identify and champion opportunities to improve site environmental performance, and lead efforts to proactively identify and champion solutions to broader, multi-site environmental risks and opportunities.
  • Maintain a detailed knowledge of key environmental issues of importance to the Copper business, and provide expert environmental advice to Copper site environmental teams, as well as Copper site operational leadership.
  • Initiate and lead comprehensive analysis of Copper operational environmental trends, incidents, practices and developments and prioritise critical focus areas for intervention.
  • Provide proactive and effective coordination on all relevant environmental related matters (including sharing of best practices and learnings from incidents) across all Copper operational sites, as well as with other Company businesses and the corporate environmental group.
  • Assist Copper operational site leadership and Group environmental functional leadership in the development of environmental talent. This includes support in assessing skills and capabilities; coaching and mentoring to improve performance; succession and career development planning and advice.
  • Field verify the quality of environmental program execution at Copper operational sites (including reporting and the investigation of environmental incidents), through both informal review as well as direct support in implementing Group Assurances programmes.
  • Represent the Copper business at relevant Group level environmental forums, in order to influence the design and roll out of environmental programs based upon Copper operational site context.
  • Monitor legislative and regulatory changes and support the Copper sites in compliance to new or changed requirements.
  • Coordinate with relevant Copper and Group level team members in Government Affairs, Community Relations, Legal etc. regarding key external stakeholder engagement and/or regulatory matters with environmental aspects.

Profile

  • An undergraduate qualification (Bachelors / Honors degree or equivalent) in a technical discipline.
  • A postgraduate qualification (Masters / Doctoral degree or equivalent) in a relevant technical discipline OR a proven track record of extensive practical experience in a role and context of similar complexity.
  • Deep knowledge of the priority environmental trends, risks and opportunities associated with copper mining, processing and related activities.
  • Track record of delivering measurable improvement in environmental performance within a large, complex operational environment.
  • Track record of acting as a business-wide coach, advisor and mentor in a technical discipline with change management expertise.
  • Demonstrated ability to successfully work in a matrix organization. Ability to drive change through influence, without direct authority.
  • Experience working within with in a large global multi-commodity mining or manufacturing organization (or related industry).
  • Specialist experience and knowledge in:
  1. Current and emerging environmental regulatory requirements in jurisdictions relevant to the Company assets.
  2. Environmental technical methods and approaches - including monitoring, assessment, modelling and analysis.
  3. Best practice Environmental performance, technologies, impact reduction & mitigation pathways, off-setting and banking approaches etc.
  • Demonstrated ability to operate as a safety leader within a large, complex mining business. Ability consistently model positive safety leadership behaviour. Deep understanding of the importance of safety.
  • Must be fluent in English.
  • International travel may be required.
  • Regularly working on site at mine operations will be required (open cut and underground mines). This may involve activities of a physical nature in a typical mine environment (for example noise, vibration, heat, small spaces, reduced visibility).
  • Ability to balance strategic thought with delivery of tangible business outcomes.
